Description: The Union County Courthouse was built next to the county jail in 1880. The land had been purchased in 1871 for the jail, and when two more lots were purchased in 1880, the courthouse construction began 100 days later in September of that year. The architect was David W. Gibbs of Toledo, Ohio, who also designed four other county courthouses in Ohio. The contractors were Karst and Woodruff. The bell tower reached 168 feet in height and the original clock was by Howard and Co. of Boston, Massachusetts. It was wound once a week by the courthouse janitor until 1942. At that time a rusty cable broke and one of the weights fell through the skylight of the rotunda, narrowly missing a court reporter. After that mishap, the clock was electrified. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a picture of "The North Family" Shaker village at Union Village. The village is 3 miles west of Lebanon, Ohio. There are several empty buildings on either side of the dirt road that runs through the picture. The back of the photo reads, ""The North Family" group of buildings at Union Village (Shakertown) 3 miles west of Lebanon, Ohio, now known as The Otterbein Home. The central building of the picture was the broom factory and the one to the left, now used as a hospital for the home, was a group residence". Union Village was the first, and largest, Shaker community west of the Allegheny Mountains, and was established in 1805. By the 1940's, Union Village was the second largest Shaker settlement with a population of 700. The village was disbanded in 1912, and the last building was demolished in 1965. Description: Dated July 1937, this photograph shows the central street of Union Village, also referred to as Shakertown. The first building on the left appears to be Marble Hall. A note on the photograph's reverse reads "View of the central group of buildings at the old Shaker settlement, 3 miles east of Lebanon, Ohio, formerly known as Union Village and commonly as Shakertown. Now the Otterbein Home, conducted for the aged and the orphans of the United Brethren Church. The entire tract of 4,500 acres formerly belonging to the Shakers is now know as Shaker Acres." Union Village was the first, and largest, Shaker community west of the Allegheny Mountains, and was established in 1805. By the 1940's, Union Village was the second largest Shaker settlement with a population of 700. The village was disbanded in 1912 and the last building was demolished in 1965. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color photograph is a close-up of the cornerstone of the historic First Presbyterian Church in West Union, Ohio, ca. 1965-1970. The text reads: “First Presbyterian Church / organized 1800 / erected 1810.” Possibly made of granite, the cornerstone contrasts sharply with the warm-toned stone wall that encases it. The congregation was organized circa 1800 on Thomas Kirker's land on Eagle Creek, about three miles from West Union. Kirker, Ohio's second governor, was influential in organizing the congregation and raising funds for the building’s construction. Stonemason Thomas Metcalfe, Kentucky governor from 1828-1832, was awarded the contract to build the walls for $250; total construction cost was $500. Before the American Civil War, the First Presbyterian Church's ministers and congregation played an active role in the abolitionist movement, including assisting fugitive slaves. During the Civil War, the church also briefly served as a barracks for the Seventieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment of recruits from Adams County and eastern Brown County. Finished on March 31, 1933, Union Terminal had the largest half-dome in the world at the time. Even today it is the largest half-dome in the Western hemisphere. The artwork associated with Union Terminal was as amazing as the physical structure. Maxfield Keck designed bas-relief figures that represented Commerce and Transportation to flank the main doors. Winold Reiss, a German-born artist, designed murals made from glass mosaic tiles to decorate the interior of the terminal. The art deco style murals illustrate the United States' transportation history, different types of work in the United States, and Cincinnati history. Most of the murals were placed within the main entry of the terminal, but additional murals, portraying major Cincinnati businesses, were located in the concourse. The concourse was torn down in the 1970s, and these murals were relocated to the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati International Airport. Another artist, Pierre Bourdelle, created a mural at the entrance of the women's lounge. After success as a train terminal throughout the 1930s and 1940s, competition from automobiles and passenger airline service led to a decline in use of the terminal. By 1972, the last train service to Union Terminal ended. After a failed attempt in 1980 to turn Union Terminal into a shopping mall, the building was opened once again in November 1990 and was known as the Museum Center. The renovated Union Terminal now houses the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History and Science, the Cincinnati History Museum, the Cincinnati Historical Society Library, the Cinergy Children's Museum, and an OMNIMAX theater. Amtrak began offering passenger train service to Union Terminal beginning in 1991. Union Terminal was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 31, 1972.
